Column Contributor: WATER FOR PEOPLE Targeting Sanitation in Bolivia
In rural Bolivia, a toilet is seen as a beautiful thing — a fancy luxury that is much too fine to be used for its intended purpose. Instead, toilets might be used to store potatoes or even live chickens. To have a toilet is a status symbol, whether or not it is operational or even outfitted with running water or pipes. These kinds of attitudes are typical of the special challenges we face in working to improve sanitation in our country.

American Water Receives National Awards for Excellence in Water Quality
American Water announced the receipt of nine Directors Awards of Recognition from the Partnership for Safe Water this year for maintaining Phase III certification. The Partnership is a voluntary initiative developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other water organizations to recognize water suppliers that consistently achieve water treatment standards that surpass EPA regulatory requirements.

Energy & Commerce Subcommittee Holds Hearing on Security
At the June 12 hearing before the Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials, Benjamin Grumbles, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Assistant Administrator for Water and Colonel Robert B. Stephan, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Protection both testified that the current exemption from chemical security regulations for wastewater treatment and drinking water facilities should be eliminated.
