NAWC Commends Private Water Industry for Raising Awareness on the National and Global Water Crisis
American States Water Company sponsors PBS documentary bringing attention to local water issues

Washington, D.C., December 13, 2007 — As much of the Southern United States continues to cope with the adverse impact of an ongoing drought, the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) commends American States Water Company for their sponsorship of and participation in a recent PBS documentary that aims to raise awareness about the water crisis in the Southwest. The film, entitled The American Southwest: Are We Running Dry, is a sequel to an earlier documentary also sponsored by American States Water Company on the global water problem.

“Continuing to assure customers sufficient quantities of affordable and safe drinking water, as well as proper sanitation, is a challenge to many local communities across the United States,” said Peter Cook, Executive Director of the NAWC. “NAWC applauds American States Water Company for teaming with other private and public entities to educate consumers and lawmakers on the critical water concerns facing the communities that they service.”

The American Southwest: Are We Running Dry gives audiences an in-depth look at the water crisis and its effects on the Southwest. Floyd Wicks, President and CEO of American States Water Company who is featured in the film, stressed the need for immediate action to find new water supply sources. Currently, the Southwest is experiencing record dry conditions that have raised questions about land use planning, climate change and management of vital water resources such as lakes and dams in the region.

“As a Southern California and Arizona based company, American State Water Company has witnessed first-hand the impact of the drought on the region,” added Cook. “Their sponsorship and participation in this film demonstrates the commitment of the private water industry to water conservation and education.”

The documentary premiered on PBS stations throughout the Southwest in September. For more information on Running Dry and the sequel, The American Southwest: Are We Running Dry, visit www.runningdry.org.
