NAWC Members Set Water and Energy Conservation Standards
for Water Utility Industry
Washington, D.C., December 11, 2007 — The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) today applauded the organization’s 140 members for pioneering numerous environmental sustainability practices that have successfully conserved water and energy. As much of the nation continues to feel the impact of this summer’s drought, NAWC recognizes the need to support aggressive community conservation and education programs, green buildings and infrastructure, wind and solar power and biodiversity.
“NAWC members have established aggressive management programs that have successfully reduced water waste,” said NAWC Executive Director Peter Cook. “NAWC members have proven that there are many viable options for energy and water conservation, and we are proud to be a part of the green solution.”
Recently, Aquarion Water Company joined forces with The Nature Conservancy in a ground-breaking partnership to establish a one-of-a-kind model for watershed management that holds sufficient water in reserve without denying the area’s watershed the water flow necessary for ecological health and vitality along the Saugatuck River in Connecticut. Other NAWC member companies, including Artesian Water Company in Delaware and California Water Services, have invested significant resources to improve and maintain the health of local watersheds, habitats and endangered species.
Earlier this year, American Water partnered with Battery Park City Authority in New York City to develop on-site wastewater and storm water treatment and recycling systems for The Solaire, the first green high-rise apartment building in the U.S. to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Water and wastewater systems in The Solaire have adopted state-of-the-art technology to conserve water use, consuming 50 percent less water than the city’s comparable apartment buildings unequipped with water reclamation systems. Since The Solaire, American Water has worked on five similar projects with the Battery Park Authority including Tribeca Green and Millennium Towers.
As a reflection of member interest and involvement in the use of green infrastructure, NAWC is also a signatory on the Green Infrastructure Statement of Support signed by nearly 30 organizations to advocate for the use of green infrastructure as one way to address the nation’s clean water challenges.
