"The National Association of Water Companies applauds the efforts of the United Nations for bringing international attention to the critical lack of clean, safe and affordable drinking water and proper sanitation around the world. Currently, 1.1 billion people live without access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation, the cause of an estimated 14,000 deaths per day globally.
“Cities across the U.S. will recognize World Water Day on March 22 by holding activities based around this day of international importance. NAWC encourages individuals and communities to become involved in activities that promote solutions to the global water crisis.
“Access to safe and reliable drinking water and proper sanitation in developing countries is a policy objective of the U.S. that is supported by water utility professionals and NAWC Members. Recently, Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ) introduced House Concurrent Resolution 318 in support of the 2008 International Year of Sanitation which seeks to raise awareness about the importance of sanitation on public health, poverty reduction, economic and social development, and the environment. There are currently 2.6 billion people globally that lack adequate sanitation services.
“The NAWC actively supports efforts to highlight and address the challenges of delivering safe and affordable drinking water to the U.S. and beyond. The private water industry is committed to delivering to its customers sufficient quantities of clean, safe and affordable water. We thank the global community for raising awareness about the need to improve access to water in developing countries.”
